Biography
Constant Smiles centers its music on the work of prolific songwriter, producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Jones, uniting disparate strands of enigmatic pop across multiple eras by fusing the relaxed approach of 1970s singer-songwriters with shoegaze, dream pop, and undercurrents from the American indie rock underground. The project functions less as a conventional band and more as a collective whose personnel and sonic identity change from one release to the next. Earlier recordings emphasized dense, reverb-drenched synth textures, yet the sound turned toward direct, organic arrangements on the 2021 Sacred Bones album Paragons before returning to synth pop territory on 2023's Kenneth Anger.
Jones launched Constant Smiles near the close of the 2000s while residing on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The endeavor stayed fluid from the outset, shifting between experimental noise, synth pop, and austere goth influences as Jones drew on rotating friends for performances and frequently issued material through independent online channels. Digital-only releases appeared regularly, among them 2013's Maya Deren and the 2016 titles Constant Haze and Constant Dream, whose self-referential names underscored their sequential presentation. The 2018 album Lost arrived as a more cohesive statement, featuring upgraded production alongside tracks built from noisy synth layers and brooding lo-fi rock. 2019's John Waters maintained a similarly remote, chilled instrumental atmosphere, after which Jones steered the project toward loose bedroom pop on 2020's Control. Sacred Bones issued the 2021 album Paragons, which presented Constant Smiles in its most immediate form to date by removing the reverb haze that had defined prior work. Jones sustained an unbroken pace of output while continuing to alter course, following the plainspoken indie folk of Paragons with the more electronic 2022 album Kenneth Anger. That release merged the project's newly transparent production with stacked melodic lines and a fluid interplay of electronic and acoustic elements.
