Kirsa Wilkenschildt, handling vibraphone and keyboards, joined vocalist Neil Henderson in early 1999 to establish the core of Copenhagen, a dark theatrical pop ensemble intent on moving past simple joint songwriting. The pair gradually assembled a full roster that incorporated double bassist John Emmerson, drummer Andy Thompson, vocalists Pauline and Jacqui Cuff formerly of Soho, trumpet player John Hutchinson, and violinist Ruth Gottlieb. The collective first appeared on record in June 2000 via the single Raining Again, then issued the follow-up single Home in January 2001, both on Super 8. Copenhagen next signed with Flower Shop, the imprint founded by Robin Proper-Sheppard of God Machine and Sophia, and delivered the debut album Tales From the Forest in December 2001.
