Biography
In 1993 the Santiago, Chile quartet Coprofago came together through vocalists/guitarists Pablo Alvarez and Sebastián Vergara, bassist Felipe Castro, and drummer Marcelo Ruiz. While still in their teens the musicians tracked a five-track demo, then revealed their highly technical death-jazz metal style—influenced by Atheist, Cynic, and kindred acts—on the 1997 album Images of Despair. Three years afterward they issued the Genesis LP, whose inclusion of Rodrigo Castro on fretless bass demonstrated the group’s determination to advance. At present Coprofago’s continued existence is clouded by the relocation of certain members to Sweden, yet reports persist that the band members are somehow still developing new material.
