Born on July 13, 1980, in San Bernardino, California, Corey Clark entered a household where both parents worked as singers. His own performing life started at age 12 when he supplied backup vocals for Barry Manilow. While still in high school he assembled the ensemble Envy, which captured multiple talent-show victories in the late 1990s and landed him a production agreement at 17. The members headed to Los Angeles, yet the unit dissolved before completing any recordings, although they had already shared stages with Mya, KRS-One, and Destiny’s Child. The Clark family’s relocation to Nashville in 2002 placed the singer near American Idol auditions then under way in the region; he advanced rapidly into the top ten. Elimination followed public allegations stemming from an October 2002 altercation that included assault on his teenage sister and resisting arrest. As the contestant field narrowed, Clark asserted that he had conducted an affair with judge Paula Abdul, claims the program’s producers and Abdul dismissed by portraying him as an opportunist seeking attention for a planned memoir about the series. His self-titled debut album appeared in the summer of 2005.
