Rooted in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Corndaddy draws its primary sound from Americana and alt-country, yet the band’s recordings also carry pronounced traces of power pop alongside unadulterated rock & roll. Kevin Brown, the lead guitarist, spent the 1970s and 1980s performing with several Michigan-based country-rock outfits before spending time in Nashville, where he assembled a group alongside songwriters Mark True and Ted Lindsay. Brown eventually made his way back to Michigan, and in 1998 he connected with guitarist and vocalist Jud Branam. The two musicians launched Corndaddy by recruiting drummer Will Stewart and bassist Jerry Hancock. A self-titled debut appeared in 2000, followed by the 2002 release Better Days. Although the band maintained an active live schedule, its next studio effort, Heart of the Matter, did not surface until 2013 and introduced new drummer Hugh Huntley.
