Biography
Formed in early 1980 under the initial name Wolfgang, the short-lived New Zealand pop band Coup d'Etat was fronted by vocalist and guitarist Harry Lyon, who had previously belonged to Hello Sailor. The remaining members included bassist Neil Hannan, keyboardist Jan Preston formerly of Red Mole, and drummer Steve Osborne. Osborne departed soon afterward and was succeeded by Paul Dunningham on drums; the group’s first single, “No Music on My Radio,” appeared shortly thereafter. Their second release, “Doctor I Like You Medicine,” became their only hit, reaching the Top Ten, and was followed by a self-titled LP. After issuing one additional single titled “Permanent Hire,” the band broke up, only to reunite briefly in 1982 before ending for good.
