Biography
As Cowboy Boy, the bi-coastal duo of Olivia Maria and Mike Nevin crafts bright power pop laced with sharp humor and relentless drive. Formed in Boston toward the end of the 2010s, the pair put out an EP prior to Maria’s relocation to Los Angeles. Their long-distance collaboration endured, eventually merging the initial recording with newer tracks into the 2021 double-EP Good Girl. The group’s first full-length album, Lipstick on a Pig, appeared in 2024 via Get Better Records.
Cowboy Boy emerged in early 2017 via Princess, a six-song EP of clever, occasionally biting yet emotionally open power pop anchored by the thick guitar-bass-drums sound of multi-instrumentalist Nevin alongside singer/lyricist/keyboardist Maria. The debut cassette came out on Los Angeles indie Solidarity Club and aligned with Maria’s shift from Boston to L.A., an event signaled by the opening track “Moving to California.” In the years that followed, the two stayed connected, exchanging ideas and laying down new songs across the distance.
The band’s next project merged the 2017 release Princess with a fresh EP into a full-length double EP. Issued in 2021 as their first outing for Philadelphia indie Get Better Records, Good Girl arrived that year. May 2024 brought the driving single “Great Scott,” whose title nods to the former Boston club; it preceded the August release of Lipstick on a Pig, Cowboy Boy’s official debut album.
