Portland, Oregon, gave rise to the punk-pop trio Crackerbash when singer and guitarist Sean Croghan, previously a member of the Hellcows, joined bassist Scott Fox and drummer Doug Nash to launch the group in 1989. The founding lineup cut its first single, “Bike,” the next year. After Crackerbash supplied the song “Spreading Flames” to the I-5 Killers compilation, the band replaced Nash with Teddy Miller, formerly of the Red Vines, in time to record the Holiday EP. Amid the mainstream success of grunge, many observers began predicting that Portland would become the next Seattle; while fellow local acts such as the Spinanes, Pond, and Sprinkler moved to Sub-Pop, Crackerbash cut the 1992 lavender-swirl 7-inch “Nov. 1” for that label’s Singles Club series. The trio next signed with the Seattle imprint Empty and delivered its self-titled debut album, followed in 1993 by the Tin Toy 10-inch. On 18 December 1993 the group played its final concert at Portland’s La Luna club; four songs from that performance later appeared on the posthumous Live EP. Croghan subsequently pursued a brief solo career before fronting Jr. High, while Fox and Miller later reunited in Satan's Pilgrims.
