Biography
Crane A.K. formed as a Berlin duo pairing one DJ with one producer, their combined efforts aimed at uniting club performance with studio craft. They surfaced toward the close of the 1990s and quickly became the flagship act on Force Inc’s Force Tracks imprint. Their distinctive blend of house’s functional grooves with minimal techno’s introspective detail aligned precisely with the label’s own direction, which later showcased artists such as Llumo and MRI. Markus Gniech supplies the project’s direct connection to the floor, performing under the name DJ Knigge to considerable praise throughout Europe and especially within Germany. Michael Friedrich serves as the studio architect, having first explored synths and samplers in the late ’80s before turning to production in 1990. The pair joined forces in winter 1998, shaping spare yet energetic minimal tracks whose balance of intellect and drive recalled the tech-house sound cultivated by Cologne producers on Kompakt during the same period. Following several well-received 12" EPs issued on Force Tracks, their debut album Pink Eyed Pony arrived in early 2001.
