Biography
Ken Yokoyama has pursued multiple ventures over the years, among them his leadership of Pizza of Death Records, yet few have proven as enduring as Crazy Ken Band. Built around Yokoyama himself, the ensemble gathers a large group of musicians whose sound playfully parodies pop conventions. At its foundation the music draws on retro influences, foregrounding styles that predate both J-Pop and J-Rock. Sentimental themes run through the lyrics, evoking an earlier, less polished Japan along with its accompanying vices, while also nodding to muscle cars—an enthusiasm Yokoyama has long maintained. These touches mirror broader currents in Japanese culture, such as the noir atmosphere of the anime series Cowboy Bebop and the jazz, blues, and rock elements supplied to that soundtrack by Yoko Kanno. Although the band began coalescing in 1991, it only gained independent momentum once Yokoyama resumed his “solo” activities around 2002. Concert appearances have earned the widest notice, yet the group’s studio albums have also maintained steady success; Zero, released in 2008, remained in Oricon’s Top Ten for a prolonged stretch.
