Biography
Forming in New York during 2004, the eccentric and bright-eyed anti-folk duo Creaky Boards consisted of singer/songwriter Andrew Hoepfner alongside trumpet player Jason Benjamin. They stirred some attention within the city's anti-folk circles, taking the stage at notable spots such as the Knitting Factory and the 2004 Summer Antifolk Fest. Under Hoepfner's guidance as the band's driving creative force, Creaky Boards grew into a five-piece ensemble. Their first full-length album, Where's the Sunshine?, arrived in 2005, shifting from anti-folk origins toward bright, playful indie pop influences reminiscent of Saturday Looks Good to Me and Fishboy. The group's lineup, featuring a rotating membership, reached six members within the following year. Brooklyn Is Love, their second album, was issued toward the end of 2007. Controversy arose in summer 2008 around the track "The Songs I Didn't Write" from this release, as Hoepfner used a YouTube mash-up to claim that Coldplay had lifted elements from it when creating "Viva la Vida," which appeared in a television advertisement then airing. Coldplay rejected the accusation, stating they had no prior awareness of Hoepfner's composition before crafting "Viva la Vida."
