Biography
Emerging from Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1992, the alternative rock duo Croatan fused punk influences into a noisy, abrasive style that cultivated a modest underground audience throughout the 1990s. Their forceful and dissonant material deliberately avoided mainstream appeal, targeting instead the fringes of rock. Singer/guitarist Jenny and drummer Mark, each known solely by first name after prior stints in separate local groups, formed the project without ever adding a bassist. Jenny’s screaming vocals and blistering electric guitar combined with Mark’s aggressive drumming to deliver an intense sonic impact. Following six years of live performances and scattered singles, the pair drew the interest of Man’s Ruin Records, which oversaw the 1998 recording of their debut album, Violent Passion Surrogate, issued by the label in January 1999. Curse of the Red Queen appeared in early 2001.
