Formed in Los Angeles during 2010, Crooks on Tape reunited former Enon noisemakers John Schmersal and Rick Lee—also known for Skeleton Key and Butter 08—with drummer Joey Galvan. The three musicians launched the project by capturing their spontaneous studio sessions at a moment when the Toko Yasuda lineup of Enon was winding down, the band having formally split in 2011, while Schmersal simultaneously performed with Caribou and Girls Against Boys. Relying on an array of synthesizers, samplers, guitar, and drums, the trio produced an energetic yet playful style that echoed Enon’s earliest work along with the assorted side endeavors of its participants. Recording stretched through 2012 before the band forwarded material to Misra Records, which issued the group’s first full-length, Fingerprint, in October 2013.
