Biography
During the closing years of the 1980s and the opening of the 1990s, the free jazz ensemble Cruel Frederick from Southern California issued a pair of recordings on the esteemed SST imprint. Their performances and track names evoked the legacies of jazz legends including Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, and particularly Albert Ayler. The debut release Birth of the Cruel from 1988 showcased Lynn Johnston handling saxophones along with clarinets, Jacob Cohn on alto saxophone, Guy Bennett contributing bass and trombone, plus Jason Kahn at the drum kit. By the time of their subsequent effort We Are the Music We Play in 1991, the roster had shifted to retain solely Johnston and Bennett, now joined by Mike Ezzo on drums.
