Crunt formed during 1993 when several musicians temporarily based in Seattle decided to pool their efforts into what amounted to an indie-rock supergroup. Guitarist and vocalist Stuart Gray, also known as Stu Spasm, initiated the project after nearly a dozen songs had been sketched out. Gray already carried a reputation in Australia stemming from his earlier work with Salamander Jim and the horn-infused punk outfit Lubricated Goat, whose lineup had once featured drummer Martin Bland before he joined the Monkeywrench. Bassist and vocalist Kat Bjelland, at the time frontwoman and guitarist of the Minnesota-based Babes in Toyland, participated alongside her husband, while Russell Simins, the regular drummer for New York City’s Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, completed the trio on drums.

The three entered Ranch studio in Seattle during February 1993, with Simins and Gray handling production duties and John Dunleavy, previously associated with the Supersuckers, serving as engineer. Their self-titled debut appeared on 15 February 1994 through Austin’s Trance Syndicate, the label run by Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey; the release marked the imprint’s first venture outside Texas artists. The album’s arrival aligned with the simultaneous issuance of the “Swine”/“Sexy” single on Australia’s Insipid label, an imprint already known for 7-inches by the Cows, Urge Overkill, and the Jesus Lizard. Before these records surfaced, the musicians had publicly indicated that Crunt would operate as a primary band rather than a casual side project, following the model of Babes in Toyland and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and they had scheduled an extensive tour.

By January 1995 the marriage between Bjelland and Gray had dissolved, bringing Crunt to a close.
