Cuarteto Patria traces its origins to 1939, when vocalist and maracas player Maria Emilia Garcia joined guitarist Pancho Cobas and the ensemble’s inaugural director Francisco Coba La to establish the group. International recognition followed once guitarist, tres player and lead vocalist Eliades Ochoa, who was born in Santiago, Chile, took the helm in 1978.

Guided by Ochoa, the quartet broadened its initial focus on bolero and criolla forms into a rhythm-driven blend that also embraced son montuno, guaracha and guajira. No recordings appeared before Ochoa’s arrival, yet four notable albums emerged afterward: A Una Coquesta in 1993, Se Salto Un Leon in 1995, the 1998 collaboration Cubafrica with Cameroon-born saxophonist Manu Dibango, and Tribute To The Cuarteto Patria, issued in September 2000 to mark the ensemble’s sixtieth anniversary.

Ochoa’s solo projects likewise spotlighted the group, most prominently his masterwork Sublime Illusion, nominated for a Grammy in the “best traditional tropical and Latin performance of 1999” category.
