Formed in 1989, the Uruguayan instrumental quartet Cuarteto Zitarrosa set out to honor the memory of Alfredo Zitarrosa, the nation's folk singer and songwriter who died that year. Throughout 1989 and 1990 the ensemble traveled across Uruguay and Argentina performing the late artist's repertoire alongside leading Latin figures such as Joan Manuel Serrat, Juan Carlos Baglietto, and Susana Rinaldi. In 1993 the group contributed the composition "Mujer Guitarra" to the production Al Calor De La Danza. Between 1994 and 1995 the musicians took part in the theatrical work Tango Veraz, earned top honors at Montevideo's Second Instrumental Music Encounter, and released their debut recording Milonga Igual in 1996; Diez Años del Cuarteto Zitarrosa appeared soon afterward.
