Before pursuing music professionally, Curtis Day showed little inclination toward a career in that field, giving in only after his grandmother urged him to start a band. His aspirations had centered on football, and he had pursued studies in computer technology, yet his grandmother's instincts held true. Upon issuing his debut album under his own name during January of 1996, observers quickly drew parallels between Day and the Kentucky-born country vocalist John Michael Montgomery, noted for a comparable vocal style. In the wake of that record's launch, he launched into the nineteen-city Dancing In The Dirt Tour, taking the stage primarily along the World's Toughest Rodeo circuit.
