Biography
Cynic Guru carves fresh territory in layered rock compositions by weaving an eclectic range of influences that stretch from jazz to classical sources. Their brand of alternative rock acquires its distinct character through unconventional instrumental blends and the players’ broad musical histories. Assembled as a five-piece outfit in Los Angeles, the band is fronted by Roland Hartwell on violin and vocals, with Marc Thomas and Mike Costantini on guitars, Vince Varquez on bass, and Matt Matson covering drums and percussion. Hartwell, an alumnus of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, launched the project in 1994. In the ensuing period he joined forces with Bryan Adams, Cher, and Puff Daddy while making further appearances with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, including its debut U.S. tour in 1996 and another engagement in 2000. Balancing those commitments, Hartwell kept the Cynic Guru collaboration alive, issuing three albums: Teaszer, Salty Flower, and the self-titled Cynic Guru.
