Biography
Cynthia Dall, a guitarist and singer-songwriter born in the USA, first lived in Sacramento, California, before heading to San Francisco in 1994 to become part of Bill Callahan’s band Smog. She stayed central to that lineup across the following three years, although her own debut album surfaced in 1996. Its deliberately opaque packaging listed neither a title nor her name as performer and contained tracks including “Christmas (California)” alongside a Russian-language number about an obsessive stalker. Speaking with the UK’s Melody Maker magazine, Dall remarked, “I just didn’t want my name on it. It’s like writing an essay at school; you know in your bones it’s pretty good, but you just don’t know what to call it.” Despite lingering doubts about where the recordings originated, they drew strong praise for their singular and emotionally resonant songwriting.
After the album appeared and her relationship with Callahan and Smog ended, little was heard from Dall for some time. Then, without warning, her next solo album Sound Restores Young Men arrived in 2002. Though it featured improved production and a more developed overall sound, the songwriting stayed sharply unsettling, while her glacial vocals intensified the disquieting mood.
