Born on 7 February 1907 in London, England, and passing away there on 24 November 1984, Cyril Watters remained one of the most accomplished behind-the-scenes figures in the city’s music industry across several decades. Although millions encountered his work regularly, his identity stayed unfamiliar to the wider public. In addition to serving as a staff arranger for firms including Chappells, where he handled material by Robert Farnon and other composers, Watters produced more than 250 mood-music pieces for London publishers’ recorded libraries, all created solely for radio, television and film use. One such piece, the ‘Willow Waltz’, was adopted by BBC Television as the theme for its serial The World Of Tim Frazer and earned him an Ivor Novello Award in 1960. He likewise supplied the music for ‘White Wedding’, a recording by Sheila Southern on HMV that exceeded 100,000 copies in 1962. Throughout the 1960s he acted as Secretary of the Light Music Society, using the position to support numerous fellow composers.
