Emerging from Texas, a cowboy-hat-sporting prodigy known for pounding rhythms quickly distinguished himself through his focus on forward-leaning electronic sounds. Although his roots lay outside electronica, prior experience with industrial music eased his shift into the club underground. The Austin native abandoned his earlier role in Culture Industry to take up the decks under the moniker D:Fuse. Within a few years he had carved out a specialty in progressive trance that has anchored his work since the mid-'90s, while he continues to explore house on the side. His profile expanded rapidly from local Austin gigs to self-promoted large-scale events, then to a residency at San Francisco’s Release party, and finally to an opening slot on Paul Oakenfold’s 2000-2001 national tour.

Record labels soon took notice. Following two independent singles, Moonshine—the leading U.S. electronic imprint whose roster already featured Keoki, Carl Cox, and Goldie—offered him a contract. The first fruits were the compilations Psychotrance 2000 and Psychotrance 2001. He next captured Progressive Mix Session 1.0 live from his 1015 Folsom residency at Release; the set reached stores midway through the Oakenfold trek. His debut Moonshine 12-inch, “Bodyshock,” appeared in July 2001. Later mix collections comprised 2002’s People, 2003’s People_2, and 2005’s People_3, while the original productions album Begin arrived in late 2004.
