Prior to gaining notice across Portland, Oregon as the duo Dahlia, Jennifer Folker and Keith Schreiner had each operated as independent artists with only modest results. Folker worked as a vocalist-for-hire on Banco de Gaia’s club hit “Obsidian,” as well as tracks by Tweaker and King Black Acid, while Schreiner issued an album under the name Auditory Sculpture as an ambient producer. Their separate endeavors produced limited impact, yet the pair’s partnership in Dahlia—with Folker supplying vocals and Schreiner shaping soundscapes—quickly positioned them as Portland’s most fashionable act. Weekly appearances at the club Ohm steadily drew larger audiences eager to witness the growing excitement. Coverage from the Portland Tribune, the Oregonian, and Seattle’s Rocket added further intrigue, setting the stage for the release of Emotional Cycles, Dahlia’s debut recording.
