Dale Wright stood out among the early crop of teen idols for his slightly bolder approach, even if his singing lacked polish and his discs rarely lingered in memory. His second release, the harder-driving “She’s Neat,” reached the Top 40 in 1958 and marked his sole entry into that bracket. While working as a disc jockey in Dayton, Ohio, Wright performed one of his own compositions live on the air, which drew the interest of Fraternity Records. He cut numerous sides for the label throughout the late ’50s, penning most of the material himself, yet only one additional single, “Please Don’t Do It,” scraped into the Top 100. Another Fraternity outing, the pointed rock & roll satire “That’s Show Biz,” displayed a dry wit, but the association ended by the early ’60s. Wright continued issuing records on smaller imprints through the middle of the decade before settling into a long-running role as a radio talk-show host in Lexington, Kentucky.
