Biography
Emerging from the post-punk landscape of Liverpool, England, Dalek I Love You arose within the Eric's Club circuit that also spawned Echo and the Bunnymen and the Teardrop Explodes. The project took root in the remains of Radio Blank when guitarist Alan Gill and bassist David Balfe established the band in November 1977. Balfe pushed for the name the Daleks while Gill favored Darling I Love You, and the pair settled on Dalek I Love You before adding keyboardist Dave Hughes, synth player Chris "Teepee" Shaw, and a drum machine to complete the first of numerous shifting line-ups.
After a series of singles exploring electronic pop textures, Balfe left to join Big in Japan and later settled in the Teardrop Explodes. By the arrival of the 1980 debut Compass Kum'pass the group had already begun to fracture: Hughes soon moved on to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, after which Gill rejoined Balfe in the Teardrop Explodes. Even so, an entirely new roster released a self-titled LP on the Korova label in 1983; under the simplified name Dalek I they followed with the cassette-only Naive in 1985 before disbanding.
