Gary Dalton, who played bass, guitar, clarinet, and vocals, teamed up with percussionist and vocalist Kent DuBarri during the mid-1970s to establish the soulful, blues-influenced outfit Dalton and DuBarri. Hammond B-3 organist Rick Allen, formerly a member of the southern California-based pop group Blue Rose, further enriched the ensemble’s texture.

CBS-Sony signed Dalton and DuBarri in 1973, yet the act fell short of commercial hopes. Although the band supported Loggins and Messina, the Doobie Brothers, Dave Mason, Rod Stewart, Boz Scaggs, Elvin Bishop, and the Beach Boys on tour, it never advanced beyond opening-act billing.

Following its release from CBS-Sony after the first two albums—Dalton & DuBarri in 1973 and Good Head in 1974—failed to achieve a commercial breakthrough, Dalton & DuBarri continued recording for ABC and Hilltak-Atlantic.
