Biography
Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Dalton Reed sought to preserve the lush textures of deep soul through the 1990s. A gospel upbringing, long considered essential for mastery in the style, informed his path; he issued his debut single on the modest imprint he established in 1986.
During childhood he delivered spiritual material in church services and performed on trumpet with his high-school marching unit. Teenage exposure to R&B and soul inspired stints with several regional groups, after which he assembled Dalton Reed and the Musical Journey Band. The unit quickly secured steady engagements in clubs and taverns spanning Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas.
Reed launched Sweet Daddy Records in 1986 and placed “Givin’ On in to Love” on that label the same year. Within a short span he and his brother Johnny started Reed Brothers Records as a second venture. Bullseye Blues signed the singer in 1990; the imprint brought out his first album, Louisiana Soul Man, in 1991 and followed it three years later with Willing & Able. Between sessions Reed maintained an extensive touring schedule that carried him to concert stages across the United States.
