Biography
Dame Fate, a moody indie rock ensemble, first assembled in 1999. After departing her Ohio groups Shanghai Lily, Avec des Papillions, and Miss May 66, vocalist and bassist Yalan Papillion moved to Washington D.C., where she connected with ex-Tuscadero guitarist Melissa Farris and the two quickly forged a close bond. Their collaboration produced Dame Fate’s signature psychedelic trip-hop textures, and by the close of the year drummer Speck had joined the fold. The group soon shared bills with Lungfish, Tristeza, the Lilys, Songs: Ohia, and His Name Is Alive. Lovitt issued the band’s debut album, Time and Tide Wait for No Man, in spring 2002.
