Biography
Whitney Johnson and Natalie Chami, established figures in Chicago’s experimental music community, joined forces as the duo Damiana. Their first album, the 2021 release Vines, mirrors the approach of Johnson’s Matchess and Chami’s TALsounds by merging hypnotic rhythms, free-flowing improvisation, and emotional songwriting.
The two artists first met during the early 2010s and began appearing together at numerous live events. Under the Damiana name they generate spontaneous pieces that combine Johnson’s viola, Chami’s electronics, and vocal harmonies from both musicians, shifting between ethereal melodies and sharp tonal clashes. After shaping the project across years of performances and home-recording sessions, Damiana issued its debut LP, Vines, on Hausu Mountain in 2021.
