Biography
The existence of the late singer/songwriter Dan del Santo verges on the extraordinary. After establishing himself within Texas’ outlaw country circuit in the late ’70s, he abandoned that genre by the mid-’80s to form the Afro-Cuban ensemble the Professors of Pleasures. For the remainder of his career Latin music served as his central outlet, a commitment reflected in his role hosting a third-world music program on an Austin radio station. Following his 1992 arrest in Virginia on charges of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, he moved to Oaxaca, Mexico, where he sustained his focus on Hispanic music by assembling the band Perros del Sol and continuing to deliver his own compositions in Spanish. In his final years he adopted the name “the Blues Demon” while appearing at an Italian restaurant.
