Singer/songwriter Dan Hazlett launched his career by taking folk songs to audiences in the early 1980s and has continued those performances without interruption. The human condition supplies the central spark behind his songwriting. Although he maintains his home base in the Detroit, MI, area, years of steady touring have carried him across the Midwest, Maine, and Canada. Heartland appeared first as a self-released project in 1992; subsequent full-length albums followed in steady succession—Island of Our Song in 1994, Our Little Secret in 1996, The Hood Ornaments in 1998, and Family Album in 2001—while additional tracks surfaced on assorted compilations. Family Album shifts its focus more explicitly toward family matters than earlier recordings, underscoring Hazlett’s commitment to his own household. That same commitment, expressed both as worker and parent, continues to surface in the measured acoustic guitar phrases and the introspective lyrics he delivers. Recognition from the American and Canadian folk scenes has followed directly from this sustained dedication. Even while maintaining his own output, Hazlett has taken on production duties and session work for fellow Michigan folk performers. He further organizes hands-on songwriter workshops and artist residencies aimed at middle-school, high-school, and adult participants. In these ways he functions as a contemporary folk artist who pairs community engagement with concise, reflective songwriting.
