Dan Martin and Michael Biello stand as originators of the emerging gay music scene, having nurtured numerous fresh talents within the community. Scores for motion pictures and videos flow from Martin’s pen, among them Clones in Love, which captured the San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Film Festival’s highest honor for Best Short. Lauren Malkasian’s video The Last Run carries his music in current PBS broadcasts, while Jim Hubbard’s The Dance—documenting the bond between Martin and his life-partner Michael Biello—has appeared at the Berlin Film Festival, MOMA, and additional festivals worldwide. Instrumental pieces by Martin also support Hazelden Publishing’s Sound Recovery series of subliminal healing cassettes as well as Erospirit’s Sexual Environments series. He established OutMusic, the collective of lesbian and gay composers, lyricists, and musicians that stages the sole yearly festival devoted to gay and lesbian music. Together with Biello, a performing visual artist who supplies Martin’s lyrics, he has mounted many queer music theatre works.
