British actor Dan Stevens first captured broad public attention in 2010 through his portrayal of Matthew Crawley in the acclaimed ITV period drama Downton Abbey. He entered the world in Croydon, London, on October 10, 1982, and took his initial steps into performance at Tonbridge School in Kent, where he secured the lead in a production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth at just 15. Following his university studies at Cambridge, he secured his debut professional engagement in 2004 as Orlando in a high-profile touring version of As You Like It. Throughout the ensuing six years he alternated between theatrical and televised work, delivering performances in BBC interpretations of Sense & Sensibility and Dracula while also appearing in the 2009 West End revival of Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia.

His profile expanded dramatically in late 2010 after Julian Fellowes cast him in a principal part for the phenomenally popular series Downton Abbey. As the heir to a Yorkshire aristocratic estate set in early-twentieth-century England, Stevens’ Matthew Crawley anchored a central romance that spanned three seasons until the character departed at the close of 2012. Turning toward cinema, he featured in the 2014 action thriller The Guest and embodied Sir Lancelot in the comedy Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. He then entered the American television arena with a starring turn in the 2016 FX sci-fi drama Legion, created by Noah Hawley. The following year brought his Disney debut opposite Emma Watson as the Beast in the live-action adaptation of the romantic musical Beauty and the Beast, on whose soundtrack he also contributed vocals.
