In the early 2000s, when numerous groups were fusing punk with disco, Dance Disaster Movement delivered one of the most raucous and forceful interpretations of that hybrid. The white-clad pair—multi-instrumentalist Kevin Disco and percussionist Matt Howze—came together in Long Beach, CA, in 2001. Frustrated by the predictability and affected attitudes they encountered in the surrounding post-punk and hardcore community, the two sought to create sounds that felt raw yet suited for dancing. Their combination of guitar and keyboard abrasion with tribal drumming drew the attention of Dim Mak Records, which signed the act and issued the debut album We Are From Nowhere in early 2003. For the remainder of that year the group stayed on the road, playing South by Southwest and sharing bills with the Watchers, the Blood Brothers, and the Ex Models.
