Biography
Daniel Cartier first appeared during the 1990s, establishing himself as an emerging singer and songwriter known for his boldness and capacity to captivate both audiences and fellow performers through his intense live shows and heartfelt compositions. His songs vary between gentle and intense moments, often enhanced by his skilled acoustic guitar work, which led many to liken his style to that of Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco, along with similar artists active at the time. Born on June 25, 1969, Cartier spent his formative years in Exeter, New Hampshire, cultivating an early passion for music by immersing himself in recordings from the 1970s and 1980s by acts such as Patti Smith, Blondie, and the Cars. He acquired keyboard skills, formed his initial group when he turned 11, and from then on dedicated himself consistently to creating and presenting music. Cartier relocated to New York in 1991, where his earliest performances in the city took place within subway stations located in the Lower East Side area. Rapidly, his reputation reached venue proprietors, allowing him to become a frequent performer at the folk and rock establishments frequented by A&R representatives throughout the area. Quickly producing material, he issued his initial pair of recordings, titled Daniel Cartier: The Troubadour of Avenue A and Live from New York: The Subway Session, via his independent Higher Power record label. The latter album was captured live in New York's Canal Street subway station before being reissued later by Ignition Records. As interest in Cartier's music and background grew, he secured a deal with a major label through Elton John's Rocket Records, a specialized imprint under A&M. This collaboration yielded the 1996 album Avenue A. Following extensive live performances and positive critical responses, shifts occurred at A&M after its acquisition, leading to the label's effective dissolution soon after the release of Avenue A. Without retention by the succeeding owners, Cartier returned to operating as an independent artist. Resilient, he persisted with his performances and recordings. In 1999, Go Records put out Glorified Demos by Cartier, after which he spent a short time based in L.A. before returning to New York in 2001 to issue Wide Outside through Jindo Records. Having paused his musical activities to attend to his aging parents, Cartier revealed in 2015 his intention to make his catalog available again in digital formats via Ditto Music.
