Young Daniel-François-Esprit Auber received an overseas posting from his father, a prosperous Parisian art dealer. While studying commerce in London the young man also moved within musical circles and began writing songs. Rising friction between England and France forced his return in 1803. Back in France he abandoned commerce and devoted himself to composition, first for the newly developing opéra comique. Early attempts met repeated failure, yet his gifts were evident and drew encouragement from several quarters, among them Cherubini. Success arrived gradually; over time he finished some fifty operas, of which Fra Diavolo alone has stayed in the standard repertory.

Auber’s output spans both opéra comique and French grand opera, and he helped establish each form. His manner is light and stands apart from the denser textures favored by his leading contemporaries. Commentators often liken it to Rossini’s, yet no one could mistake an Auber score for another composer’s work. In 1842 he joined the faculty of the Paris Conservatory and remained there until his death at the age of 89.
