Daniel Lee Martin walked away from prior careers in baseball, professional golf, and advertising during 1997, committing instead to his goal of establishing himself as a country recording artist. A Nashville showcase in 1999 produced an offer from Atlantic Records that ultimately dissolved without explanation. Additional major labels expressed interest across the following four years, yet none of those overtures resulted in a contract. He opened shows for Willie Nelson and Charlie Daniels while maintaining an annual slot at Fan Fair in Nashville. Martin became the first artist signed to ChinMusic Records in November 2002. The label released his debut album, All That I Am, in 2003.
