Daniel Ögren crafts lush, playful sounds drawing from South American and Nordic folk traditions, exotica, psychedelic pop, and film scores, yet his work continues to shift and resist easy classification. As a Swedish producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist, he has contributed to numerous projects by Anna von Hausswolff as well as fellow Scandinavian acts including the Mary Onettes and Sven Wunder. His debut arrived as the 2011 album Laponia, after which he issued a series of limited cassettes and LPs. The 2020 release Fastingen-92 spotlighted the immediately recognizable track “Idag,” performed by Anna Ahnlund; together they formed the band Dina Ögon, whose self-titled debut appeared in 2021 and was followed by Oas in 2023.

Ögren spent his childhood in the small town of Kristinehamn in Sweden’s Värmland County. Exposure to a Bolivian ensemble at the annual Fastingen carnival sparked his passion for music, an experience that continues to inform his deep engagement with South American styles, especially cumbia and huayno, alongside the work of soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny. Throughout the early 2010s he appeared on multiple Anna von Hausswolff recordings and joined the indie-pop group Mainekk. His first album, the jazzy instrumental Laponia, was captured inside an old wooden church and issued by Hoob Jazz in 2011. Havtorn Records put out the more experimental Laponia II as a limited cassette in 2013, while Brev Till Kristinehamn emerged the following year. Early 2015 brought Sånga, a multimedia project with artist Karin Granqvist released solely on vinyl, and Mountains, a collection of playful instrumental pop, closed out the year.

Further explorations of dreamy, vintage-tinged pieces yielded Brev från Leksand on Pomperipossa Records in 2018. Fastingen-92, titled after the childhood carnival that shaped him, came out via Sing a Song Fighter in 2020 and featured vocalist Anna Ahnlund on the single “Idag.” The track gained underground traction, prompting the pair to launch the soul-pop outfit Dina Ögon, whose self-titled LP arrived in 2021. Ahnlund supplied wordless vocals for Laponia III, released in early 2022. Dina Ögon’s second album, the smooth psychedelic soul set Oas, appeared on Playground Music in early 2023. That same year the U.K. imprint Mr Bongo reissued the sought-after Fastingen-92, originally pressed in a run of just 100 LPs.
