Biography
Los Angeles-based composer Daniel Wohl, originally from France, crafts innovative contemporary pieces that fuse live acoustic instruments with electronic textures. Ensembles such as the American Symphony Orchestra, the Calder Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and So Percussion have presented his music, while his touring and collaborative work has linked him with Julia Holter, Dan Deacon, Lucky Dragons, and Son Lux. Although his early musical training took place in Paris, Wohl has long maintained his professional life in the United States, where he earned composition degrees from Bard College, the University of Michigan, and the Yale School of Music under instructors including David Lang, Ingram Marshall, William Bolcom, and Joan Tower. He has also served as an educator, leading programs at Sarah Lawrence and Yale.
His first album, Corps Exquis, appeared on New Amsterdam Records in 2013 as the recorded counterpart to a multimedia chamber-and-electronics endeavor developed with the TRANSIT new music ensemble and a group of New York-based video artists. The widely praised release included contributions from Holter, Aaron Roche, and So Percussion. Following its appearance, Wohl received a growing number of commissions; an extensive body of his unrecorded scores has reached audiences through performances by numerous distinguished groups at sites that include Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Center, the Rome Film Festival, and Switzerland’s NordKlang.
Wohl has additionally composed for film, sharing scoring duties with Garth Neustadter on The Color of Time. The project, drawn from the life of C.K. Williams, featured performances by James Franco, Mila Kunis, and Jessica Chastain. Early 2016 brought the release of his second album, Holographic, again on New Amsterdam Records; Mantra Percussion Quartet, Iktus Percussion, Mivos Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and vocalists Olga Bell (Dirty Projectors) and Caroline Shaw (Roomful of Teeth) took part in the recording.
