Born on 2 December 1954 in Fort Worth, Texas, Alexander studied piano during childhood and began earning a living as a vocalist in her late teens. She started out performing jazz before broadening her sets to include rock and country, which led her to Las Vegas for casino work. Growing weary of the city and its associated lifestyle, she joined bands across several locations, among them Los Angeles, and reached Nashville in 1986. There she concentrated on songwriting, yet after failing to place her material with other artists she began recording the songs herself. Citing K.T. Oslin as an influence, she landed a deal with Mercury Records and scored her first Billboard country Top 20 entry with ‘She’s There’ in 1989. Only two modest follow-up hits materialized, and although she was once characterized as ‘a breezy Texas Ms, who’s stretching the boundaries of country music’, she has not borne out that assessment.
