Biography
A prominent presence in the musical scene across the English Midlands, Daniele Rosina has long promoted the work of living composers while establishing himself as a dedicated teacher. Born in Bournemouth in 1979, he first felt drawn to the podium after seeing Zubin Mehta conduct on Italian television. As a member of his school orchestra he grew dissatisfied with the repertory then in use; when the instructor suggested he seek out stronger material, Rosina returned home and prepared an orchestral suite drawn from Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci. The teacher responded by allowing him to direct the piece. He later stepped in to lead the Bournemouth Youth Symphony after the ensemble’s regular conductor was called away because his wife had gone into labor just before a scheduled performance. In 1997 Rosina entered the Birmingham Conservatoire, where he pursued conducting studies with Andrew Mogrelia and Edwin Roxburgh and also trained on clarinet. While still a student he directed several campus groups, presenting concerts both at the conservatory and at the Bromsgrove Festival as well as in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. Already drawn to new music, he guided the institution’s Composers’ Ensemble through works written by fellow students. For a period he served as assistant conductor with the San Francisco Ballet, traveling with the company in both the United States and Britain. In 2005 he joined the conservatoire’s faculty as a conducting tutor and, the next year, took on a comparable post at the University of Birmingham; he has continued to teach and lead ensembles at both schools. Rosina is widely recognized in Birmingham and farther afield for his advocacy of contemporary music, directing the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Ensemble Court-Circuit, and Orkest De Ereprijs. He holds the post of principal conductor with the Decibel Ensemble and appears regularly as a guest with the Orchestra of the Swan, for which he recorded the album Labyrinths in 2021.
