Following an unsuccessful bid at professional athletics, Contemporary Christian entertainer Danny Gans redirected his energies toward show business. Upon completing college he had been selected for baseball's minor-league system, yet an Achilles' tendon rupture terminated those prospects. Once healed, he tried standup comedy, only to discover that the club circuit clashed with his Christian convictions. He therefore pursued acting, logging guest spots on television series, appearing in commercials, and securing a minor role in the 1988 baseball film Bull Durham. A decisive shift occurred after he witnessed a Sammy Davis, Jr. performance and resolved to create a comparable variety act that combined singing, comedy, and impressions. He refined this routine on the dinner-theater and industrial-show circuit until a Variety review of a Los Angeles engagement prompted New York producers to offer him a solo Broadway presentation. Thereafter he settled in Las Vegas as a resident headliner, relocating his family to the city. In early 2000 Word/Epic Records issued his first Contemporary Christian album, Brand New Dream, while the Mirage Hotel on the Vegas Strip opened a 1200-seat venue bearing his name.
