Biography
English musician Danny Goffey first gained recognition for his drumming role in the indie rock group Supergrass, though he has also pursued a path as a singer and songwriter. Raised in Berkshire, he launched his musical journey young by assembling the Jubby Spufflewubs alongside his brother and a close friend. That short-lived project took a playful approach, relying on everyday household items for rhythm since a proper drum kit remained out of reach. Once his parents supplied a snare and hi-hat, he started another group called the Fallopian Tubes. At thirteen, after his family moved to Oxfordshire, he encountered Gaz Coombes and together they established the Jennifers, a band that built a solid following through local Oxford gigs. The Jennifers issued only two recordings—the independently released single “Flying” in 1991 and the Just Got Back Today EP on Nude Records in 1992—before disbanding. Goffey and Coombes kept writing together and, in 1993, formed Supergrass with bassist Mick Quinn. Their first album, I Should Coco, arrived in 1995 and debuted at number one on the charts. The follow-up, In It for the Money, came out in 1997, after which the band issued four additional records before calling it quits in 2010. While Supergrass remained active, Goffey posted three of his own tracks online in 2006 under the name Van Goffey. Earlier, in 2004, he appeared on the charity football single “Born in England” by Twisted X as well as the Band Aid 20 rendition of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Between 2007 and 2008, he and Coombes performed cover versions as the Hotrats—taking the name from Frank Zappa’s 1969 album—and released the collection Turn Ons, which they supported with a nationwide tour. Also in 2008, Goffey joined Coombes, Paul Weller, and Graham Coxon on the single “Consequences,” whose proceeds went to the homelessness charity Crisis. In 2010 he stepped in as touring drummer for Babyshambles following the exit of their previous percussionist. Returning to solo work, he issued Take Off Your Jacket and Get Into It in 2015 and followed it with the sophomore album Schtick in 2018.
