From Beaumont, Texas, singer, songwriter, and musician Danny Tate built a long and productive career that yielded numerous hit songs along with recordings that drew critical acclaim. Born into a family steeped in music and devout religious practice, the young Tate revealed an aptitude for singing and songwriting that hinted at a path echoing his father’s work as a preacher, though one channeled through musical expression. He chose a secular direction instead, moving to Nashville and entering the ranks of successful songwriters once Rick Springfield scored a hit with the Tate-penned “Affair of the Heart.” As his work gravitated toward rock and pop, Tate left Nashville for Los Angeles, where he assembled a sequence of hits cut by Kenny Wayne Shepard, the Jeff Healy Band, Billy Ray Cyrus, Nelson, David Lee Murphy, and many others. In the early 1990s he began releasing his own albums, issuing his self-titled debut in 1992 and Nobody’s Perfect in 1995. Both sets highlight his refined songcraft and commanding pop vocal approach. Suggesting mellower, country-tinged echoes of Bon Jovi records, the releases come across as sleek, engaging, and sincere. Tate kept writing for fellow artists during the decade, at one point notching three number one hits across four years. He continues to write and record, lately focusing on several prominent film projects. Enduring achievement of this kind stems from the uncommon combination of talent, intelligence, and instinct that Tate has demonstrated.
