Daphne & Celeste, an American bubblegum pop duo, craft catchy songs while adopting an ironic stance toward both the music scene and the business itself. Karen DiConcetto along with Celeste Cruz first encountered each other upon answering a classified ad in a newspaper that called for vocalists to join a band, only to be instructed instead to create a pop duo targeting listeners in the U.K. and across Europe. At the dawn of the new millennium, they put out a pair of successful singles such as "Ooh Stick You" and "U.G.L.Y.," as well as a rendition of Alice Cooper's "School's Out." Not long after those releases came their debut album We Didn't Say That in 2000, an effort that came just before their memorable and controversial performance at the Reading Rock Festival during August that year. Their label let them go in 2001, and soon afterward Perfect Noise Limited, the company managing them, also ceased operations. Outside of music the two pursued other interests, as each of the vocalists ventured into acting careers. A short-lived reunion occurred in 2005 for a tour alongside Lolly, yet they showed no real commitment to new recordings until an unexpected outreach in 2011 from the unconventional electronic producer Max Tundra, whose real name is Ben Jacobs. Eager to branch out into pop, he believed Daphne & Celeste were ideally suited to realize that ambition. Following their acceptance, the three collaborators started on a track called "You and I Alone," a cheerful and unconventional pop number. Upon its 2015 release the song generated modest attention for the duo without fully restoring their prominence. Content with the results, the group proceeded to develop an entire album. Issued in 2018 via Balatonic, the label newly established by Jacobs, Daphne & Celeste Save the World delivered further quirky pop tracks incorporating elements of chiptune, synth pop, and avant-garde electronics.
