Biography
A few years after departing Bad Religion, Epitaph founder Brett Gurewitz put together the Daredevils alongside guitarist Gore Verbinski of the Little Kings, versatile drummer Josh Freese (formerly of the Vandals, Devo, Paul Westerberg, and Wayne Kramer), and bassist Dean Opseth from Medicine. The group set out to issue multiple two-song singles and managed to get one of them, titled Hate You, out in early 1996. Its A-side delivered a biting track reminiscent of the Soft Boys’ “I Wanna Destroy You” and was widely thought to target Bad Religion bassist Jay Bentley. No further material ever appeared. Gurewitz returned to Bad Religion in time for their 2002 album The Process of Belief, which also marked the band’s return to Epitaph. Verbinski, already responsible for several Bad Religion videos, expanded his filmmaking work with features such as The Mexican and earned multiple Clio Awards. Freese maintained a busy schedule as a session player while serving as a core member of A Perfect Circle and contributing to Guns N’ Roses.
