Jazz singer DARIA possesses a notable three-octave vocal range capable of turning silky smooth to match a given song. Born in San Francisco, California, she grew up surrounded by creatively accomplished relatives, among them a father who served for many years as a concert violinist with the San Francisco Symphony, a mother who works as a novelist, a sister who paints, and a brother who has chosen to pursue the violin in the same dedicated manner as their father. Little wonder, then, that DARIA took up classical piano studies at the age of six, with her father guiding her through the reading of symphonic scores. While enrolled in ordinary schools she sang in choirs and absorbed a typical range of musical styles, yet by her teenage years an introduction to jazz had sparked an immediate passion for its sonic textures and emotional depth.

Even as her interest in music and performance deepened, DARIA remained committed to her education, completing high school and then earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a foreign languages degree at a California college. Over time she trained with accomplished instructors that included vocalists Mark Murphy and Bobby McFerrin. Frequent touring has taken her to clubs, colleges, and coffee houses alike.

Her first album, the aptly titled Just the Beginning, appeared in 1998 and featured support from bassist Bill Douglass, drummer Curt Moore, percussionist Ian Dogole, clarinetist Sheldon Brown, and saxophonist Marci Miget. Among the jazz selections offered were “You Stepped Out of a Dream,” “Japanese Love Affair,” “Children’s Games,” and “Daydream.” Later releases followed with 2004’s I Have a Dream, 2007’s Beautiful Rainbow World, and 2008’s Grandchildren’s Delight: Best-Loved Songs from the Good Old Days.
