In 2004, singer/guitarist Jim McHugh and bassist Ben Clack left North Carolina for Athens, Georgia, where a chance meeting at a downtown restaurant introduced them to guitarist Kris Deason of Subversivo and drummer Forrest Leffer, formerly of Carrie Nations; McHugh and Clack promptly assembled the musical collective Dark Meat around this core. Growth came quickly as the lineup absorbed second drummer Chris "SpiritBird" Bradley (later succeeded by Jason Robira), the three-voice backing group known as the Subtweeters (Heather Heyn-Leffer, Page Campbell, and Claire Campbell), and a horn section anchored by Charlie Estes on trumpet and Aaron Jollay on trombone with reed players Jeff Tobias, Alexis Daglis, and Becky Noble. Additional contributors comprised fiddle and bass clarinet specialist John Fernandes, previously of Elf Power and Circulatory System, percussionist Chris Smith, and Michael "Toshira" Davis on didgeridoo. Dark Meat issued their debut album, Universal Indians, via Cloud Recordings on October 24, 2006.
