Biography
New York's Darren Lyons Group emerged in the late '90s as a fusion-influenced ensemble under the direction of drummer Darren Lyons, first drawing notice through performances at the Knitting Factory and later issuing the 2003 album Evil Genius.
Lyons, born in Jersey City, New Jersey, spent his formative years in Rochester, New York, where an early fascination with drumming took hold. Exposure to his parents' Motown and R&B collection sparked parallel interests in jazz and prog-rock, with particular regard for Billy Cobham, George Duke, Yes, and Genesis. While prioritizing music, he completed an economics degree at Columbia University and pursued private studies with Artt Frank, Mike DiPasqua, Adam Nussbaum, and Peter Erskine. Additional early experience included a dishwasher position at New York's 7th Avenue South and freelance work throughout the area alongside fusion group Kilimanjaro and pianist Lee Shaw.
Around 1996 Lyons assembled the Darren Lyons Group, an electric fusion unit that featured guitarist/composer Chad McLoughlin, keyboardist Mark Adamy, keyboardist David Starck, and bassist Skip Ward at different points. The band earned two consecutive Disc Makers Independent Music World Series victories, resulting in appearances on the compilations New York Heavy Hitters, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Over the ensuing decade the ensemble maintained a steady presence at the Knitting Factory and the Blue Note before releasing its David Sancious-produced debut, Evil Genius.
Separately, Lyons established the acoustic standards project Three Trios, which includes bassist Paul Beaudry and a rotating roster of pianists such as Carlton Holmes, Jeremy Manasia, and Lou Rainone; the ensemble's first recording arrived as 2010's Three Trios. He has also produced albums for Kramer Daniels, appeared on projects by Randy Holden, Vince Martell, and Urban Soul, and formed the experimental electronic duo Armed & Dangerous with percussionist Manolo Badrena.
