Darren Sylvester, an Australian singer and songwriter, spent the ten years prior to releasing his first album in 2009 building a strong reputation as a visual artist both domestically and internationally. Residing in Melbourne, his expertise particularly shines in photography, video, and sculpture, fields he persistently merges with his growing pursuits in music. Early video works featured his portrayals of David Bowie and Kate Bush, and he constructed an exact duplicate of the Carpenters' garden in Los Angeles as part of one installation. Upon deciding to launch his music career, Sylvester maintained his careful approach from visual arts, handling the composition, recording, and performance of all parts on the self-titled album from 2009. His artwork's pop sensibilities foreshadowed songs that were clever and tuneful, drawing primary inspiration from T. Rex and Roxy Music. He persisted in visual projects while gradually crafting his next album, Off by Heart, issued in 2013. This effort surpassed the initial release in sophisticated styling and embraced the polished, ethereal production techniques characteristic of the mid-1980s, evoking the theatrical pop elements associated with Bryan Ferry and New Order. Remaining true to a solitary creative approach, Sylvester once more took on production duties and performed all instruments himself, incorporating sporadic female vocal harmonies.
